Pitch up and Sing! is a sociable singing group for those living with memory loss or dementia, and their families and friends. The free sessions are funded by Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CFT) and delivered in partnership with Cornwall Music Service Trust (CMST).
Anyone can join Pitch up and Sing! at Carleen Village Hall every Thursday during term-time from 2pm to 3.30pm.
Rachel Bennetts, who is runs Pitch Up and Sing! commented: ‘Events like this are enjoyable for all and also help to spread the word about our group. As the Mayor gets to meet a variety of people locally he is a good advocate. We’re pleased to welcome new participants whether for a weekly sing or simply to drop in when they can’.
Dr Barbara Vann, Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust Chair said,
“It’s very easy to become isolated if you or a family member has dementia. Staying in touch with others through groups like Pitch up and Sing! helps to keep people active and stimulated and allows carers to meet people in a similar situation and to share advice and support.”
To see the benefits of singing for people with dementia you only need to look at the viral video of Ted McDermott and his son singing in the car. Rachel explains more: “Singing has always been a part of Cornish communities and research shows that singing is good for us. It helps our memory, improves breathing and heart health, and increases our sense of wellbeing.
“No singing experience is required. We’ll be singing a mix of songs from the 30s to the 60s to build up our confidence as well as learning new songs from around the world.”
After working up a thirst singers will be invited to socialise and make new friends over a refreshing cup of tea.
This initiative is part of the Shaping our Future transformation programme that is bringing together the NHS, social care and public health across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to achieve positive and genuine improvement in health and social care delivery.
